How the winning run scored: Norfolk's Xavier Avery, from Cedar Grove High School, led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and scored on a ground out to give the host Tides a 1-0 lead on Wednesday night.

At the plate: Norfolk outhit the G-Braves 16-3. Todd Cunningham had two singles and Luis Nunez one for Gwinnett. Russ Canzler, Yamaico Navarro and Avery had three hits apiece for Norfolk.

On the mound: The Tides pounded the first two G-Braves pitchers. Starter Joe Bisenius (2-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits. He allowed four doubles and a triple. Reliever Cole McMurry pitched one inning, and he allowed four runs on six hits and three walks.

Up next for Gwinnett: The G-Braves (37-50) meet the Charlotte Knights at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Gwinnett right-hander Cody Martin (2-0, 1.29 ERA) is scheduled to start against righty Jason Berken (6-8, 3.95).
