Craig Kimbrel hasn’t pitched in the Braves’ first six Grapefruit League games, but manager Fredi Gonzalez said fans and others needn’t be concerned about the veteran closer belated spring debut.

“That’s by design,” Gonzalez said. “He had a lot of appearances last year. As far as injury-wise, he’s fine. What does he need, six games and he’ll be ready to go? I saw his name on the list (of pitching plans), I think this week sometime.”

A four-time All-Star who has led or tied for the National League lead in each of his four full seasons as closer, Kimbrel has learned through experience that there is a point of diminishing return for him in his offseason throwing program or spring-training work. He and pitching coach Roger McDowell have discussed his optimal preparation.
