Five trades for Dan Uggla (that will never happen)

Braves second baseman Dan Uggla is hitting .178 this season and not living up to the expectations of his five-year $62 million contract.

The Braves have made no secret they're not pleased with Dan Uggla's performance. The second baseman, who hasn't seen the starting lineup for more than half a dozen games over the last two weeks, is hitting .178 (below his 2013 average of .179). Here are five players who have been hinted as possible trade prospects, but let's be real, the likelihood of any of these deals happening is slim to zilch:

Former Georgia Bulldog Gordon Beckham has faced some competition since he was drafted 8th overall in 2008 moving from third to shortstop to second in the infield. Beckham is hitting .288 and has a .985 fielding percentage in five seasons to the right of the infield. Possibly propelling a trade is prospect Marcus Semien, who in 38 games is batting .213 with 3 homers (all go-ahead home runs in the seventh inning or later). Why it probably won't happen. Beckham makes $4.175 million and is a free agent in 2016. Dan Uggla is under contract through next season at $13 million a pop.

Speedy Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is not the power hitter Dan Uggla is supposed to be, but he does get on base. Altuve is batting .313 and leads the American League with 15 stolen bases. Why it makes sense? John Mallee was the hitting coach of the Marlins in 2011 when Uggla hit 33 home runs and 105 RBIs. John Mallee is Houston's hitting coach now. If anyone can make Uggla a power hitter again, it could be Mallee.

Mentioned wildly in rumor mills has been Toronto infielder prospect Ryan Goins. Goins, now in Triple-A was hitting .150 in the majors, though his defense is major-league caliber. Why it won't happen? The Blue Jays really want pitching, the Braves have arms, but most under 1-year contracts ... and that's not to mention Dan Uggla's remaining $26 million deal.

Mariners infielder Nick Franklin, who is batting .376 with a 1.114 OPS in Triple-A, has been the hot name of late for a Dan Uggla trade. But there are a few reason this one will likely not come to pass. Seattle needs corner infielders. There's a guy by the name of Robinson Cano who is Seattle's everyday second baseman. It's unlikely Seattle will spring for Cano's $24 million and Uggla's $13 million in one position.

Brandon Phillips is a three-time Gold Glove-winning second baseman. Phillips had a career-high 103 RBIs last season. Why would Cincinnati give him up? Phillips publicly bashed the team over Joey Votto's $225 million. Phillips is under contract for the next four seasons and won't make Uggla's $13 million until year 2016.
