NL East notes

Braves

With a franchise-record 16-game hitting streak for a catcher, Evan Gattis passed Del Crandall (1958), and Joe Torre, (1967), both who had 15-game streaks. … RHP Ervin Santana (5-4) continued to struggle. Santana is 1-4 with a 6.17 ERA in his last seven starts. He was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in his first six starts. … RHP David Carpenter (strained right biceps) was placed on the 15-day DL.

Marlins

Miami leads the majors in home victories. … Jacob Turner had a rough day last week: First, he lost his starter’s job. Then he lost the game as a reliever in the 13th inning. Turner (2-5) was demoted when the Marlins called up two rookie pitchers. “I’m just trying to help the team win,” he said. “There is an adjustment warming up. But once you are out there, it’s just a matter of making quality pitches.”

Mets

Manager Terry Collins batted the pitcher eighth for the first time in franchise history in the town where Tony La Russa often used on the lineup attention-grabber in an effort to boost offense. Eric Young Jr. was activated off the 15-day DL before Monday night’s game against the Cardinals and was batting ninth behind rookie RHP Jacob deGrom. La Russa was the first manager Collins saw use the ploy. “All I know is there’s a guy in the Hall of Fame that did it, so it can’t be all bad,” Collins said. “You know what, this might be the perfect time. We’ll see if it works.” … The Mets announced that the LHP Blake Taylor, a second-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2013 draft, was the player named later in the trade that sent Ike Davis to the Pirates in April. Taylor will be assigned to the rookie-level Gulf Coast Mets.

Nationals

OF Bryce Harper took two-handed swings for the first time since injuring his left thumb April 25. Manager Matt Williams said Harper hit soft toss pitching in the indoor batting cage and the goal is to evaluate him on the field. Williams pointed to “beyond July 1” for Harper’s return. … Ryan Zimmerman has struggled since returning from the DL. “When you don’t play for as long as I did and you come back, it’s hard to be consistent, but I’ve been playing for a little while now and I’m starting to get back into a groove,” he said.

Phillies

To commemorate the 1964 club that nearly reached the World Series, the Phillies wore throwback uniforms from that season. Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, who threw the only perfect game on Father’s Day in major league history for the Phillies against the Mets 50 years ago, tossed out the ceremonial first pitch. And, in keeping with the ‘60s theme, Art Garfunkel sank “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch. … OF Tony Gwynn Jr. was placed on the bereavement list. Gwynn’s father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, died of cancer Monday. He was 54. … LHP Cliff Lee, on the DL since May 20 with a strained elbow, threw off a mound.
