BALTIMORE—The Braves placed left-hander Manny Banuelos on the disabled list Tuesday after he experienced inflammation in his elbow following his last start.

Banuelos last pitched at St. Louis on Friday. He hadn’t thrown since then as the Braves waited to see if he would recover in time for his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Orioles.

Banuelos returned to Atlanta on Tuesday to have the elbow examined.

“I don’t think it’s very serious,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I think it was a thing where we are going to be cautious with him. We’ll know more when we get some of the (test results) from our doctor. He’s going to see what is the next step.”

Banuelos underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in Oct. 2012 and did not pitch during the 2013 season. The Braves acquired him in a trade with the Yankees in January and called him up to take Williams Perez’ spot in the rotation after Perez went on the disabled list with a foot injury.

Banuelos pitched five innings against the Cardinals Friday and allowed four runs on six hits whole throwing 92 pitches. Gonzalez said the Braves became concerned because the velocity on Banuelos’ pitches was slower than normal.

Banuelos has made five appearances for the Braves (four starts) while posting a 2.49 ERA over 21 2/3 innings. Banuelos has pitched a total of 104 2/3 innings this year, about 25 innings short of the limit set by the Braves, so Gonzalez said it’s possible he will be shut down for the rest of the season even if his injury is not serious.

The Braves were to announce the starting pitcher following their game against the Orioles on Tuesday. The most likely candidate is right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, who was the scheduled starter for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Foltynewicz made nine starts for the Braves this season before being sent down to Gwinnett because of ineffectiveness. He also made three relief appearances for the Braves earlier this month.

Overall with the Braves Foltynewicz has a 5.27 ERA with 52 strikeouts and and 18 walks in 54 2/3 innings.
