LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Braves reassigned pitching prospect Patrick Weigel to minor league camp Friday, the 10th roster move made in a three-day span, almost all of which involved pitchers optioned or reassigned.
The Braves’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2016, Weigel pitched in two Grapefruit League games and got roughed up for five hits, six runs and one walk in one inning of work. Like other prospects sent down this week, the Weigel move was expected and done so he could begin getting stretched out as a starter in minor league games that begin next week.
Meanwhile, the Braves have fewer innings available as their starters go deeper in games and the remaining innings are divvied up between relievers who either are already penciled in the bullpen or competing for spots.
There are 46 active players remaining in Braves camp, including 25 pitchers. A year ago, the Braves had a whopping 70 players in camp at the beginning of spring training.
