Braves right-hander Mike Foltynewicz has been hospitalized because of blood clots in his throwing arm, assistant general manager John Coppolella said on Sunday.
Coppolella said Foltynewicz felt pain in the arm Thursday night and it was reddened and swollen when he reported to Turner Field on Friday. The team sent Foltynewicz to the emergency room and Foltynewicz remained hospitalized as of Sunday afternoon, Coppolella said.
Coppolella said the team had no information on how the clot developed or Foltynewicz’s prognosis.
“We’re kind of just trying to evaluate where it would go from here,” Coppolella said. “Our first and foremost thoughts were just for his health and that he is OK. We should learn more going forward.”
Foltynewicz hasn’t pitched since starting against the Rockies on Aug. 25. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sept. 2 because of costochondritis, or inflammation of cartilage near the ribs. Coppolella said the blood clots are unrelated to Foltynewicz’s earlier ailment.
Foltynewicz, 23, is one of the Braves’ top prospects. They acquired him as the centerpiece of a January trade in which they sent catcher Evan Gattis to the Astros.
Foltynewicz had had three separate stints with the big-league club this season. In 18 games (15 starts) he’s 4-6 with a 5.71 ERA over 86 2/3 innings with 77 strikeouts and 29 walks.
