Braves right-hander Trevor Cahill is set to join the starting rotation on Tuesday after he threw a short live batting-practice session on Saturday to prepare for the outing.
The Braves didn’t need a fifth starter the first time through the rotation because of an off day on Thursday. Cahill was available out of the bullpen but didn’t make an appearance. Cahill threw about 25 pitches to teammates Phil Gosselin and Jace Peterson during Saturday’s session.
“He looked good, man,” Peterson said. “Three- or four-pitch mix, all for strikes. I’m exciting to get him in the rotation.”
Cahill is scheduled to face Marlins right-hander Tom Koehler (0-1, 3.00 ERA).
Cahill was 3-12 with a 5.61 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for the Diamondbacks in 2014. Cahill is 62-67 with a 4.11 ERA in 170 career starts.
The Braves acquired Cahill in an April 3 trade with Arizona for minor league outfielder Josh Elander. The Diamondbacks also sent the Braves $6.8 million to offset most of Cahill’s $12 million salary this season.
