Braves’ C. Johnson set to begin rehab assignment

May 24, 2015

Braves third baseman Chris Johnson is set to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment after he had no issues with his hand taking batting practice Sunday at Turner Field.

Johnson has been out since April 30 with bone bruises and a fracture in his left hand near the thumb. He said he no longer feels pain when hitting balls.

“Actually it feels pretty good,” Johnson said. “There was one day where there was some soreness after a long day of BP. I took the next day off and then after that it’s felt pretty good.”

Johnson is scheduled to play three games at Triple-A Gwinnett starting Monday before joining the Braves for their series at the Giants on Thursday.

Johnson was diagnosed with bone bruises after he jammed his hand while making a slide into second base. The bruises aggravated an old fracture in the hand that had been previously undiagnosed.

Johnson is hitting .279 (12-for-43) with a .347 on-base percentage in 16 games. He was playing in a platoon with Alberto Callaspo and Kelly Johnson before his injury. The team’s depth at third base was thinned further when Kelly Johnson (oblique) and Phil Gosselin (thumb) were placed on the disabled list within the past two weeks.
