Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was feeling much better Tuesday, according to manager Brian Snitker, after leaving Sunday’s game because of a bothersome bone spur in his right elbow.

Freeman stayed in Atlanta to rehab and rest while the team plays a pair in Kansas City beginning Tuesday night. The All-Star is still expected to rejoin his teammates in New York on Friday.

“I heard he’s feeling a lot better,” Snitker said Tuesday afternoon. “This is going to be a really good little blow for him where he can just concentrate on the treatment and getting back good. It’s been very, very positive so far. I have a feeling when he shows up Friday, he’s going to be really good to go.”

Freeman has played through spurs in recent seasons, but the irritation forced him out of a game earlier this month in Washington. It flared again in the days leading to Sunday, when he and the team decided it would be best if he sat out their short trip to the Midwest.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli manned first base in Freeman’s absence Sunday. Austin Riley, usually a third baseman and outfielder, handled first Tuesday.

The schedule worked in Freeman’s and the Braves’ favor. The Braves were off Monday, play Tuesday and Wednesday, then receive another off day Thursday before finishing the regular season in New York.

“The schedule worked for us in that respect,” Snitker said. “He’s feeling really good, and I wouldn’t doubt if he takes a few cuts (swings) before coming to New York. That was a good call, leaving him back for a few days.”
