Braves manager Brian Snitker planned to give second baseman Brandon Phillips the day off Wednesday in an effort to protect his sore left groin.

Phillips wasn’t in the lineup for the game against the Mets. Snitker said he wanted Phillips to rest after he played in all four games, with three starts, since suffering the injury April 26 at the Mets.

Snitker said he’d rather not sit Phillips, who has been among the team’s most productive everyday players. Entering Wednesday, Phillips was hitting .329 with a .360 on-base percentage and .459 slugging percentage.

Snitker said Phillips hasn’t aggravated the injury.

“We just want to be careful a little bit with him,” Snitker said. “I’m sure he’s sore. He’s going to have to manage it for a while, probably. It’s not anything that just goes away. I’m sure he feels it. He’s getting treatment. He’s been around long enough (to manage it).”

Snitker said he hoped Phillips could play in the next four games leading to team’s scheduled off day Monday. The Braves also have an off day after a two-game series at Houston next Tuesday and Wednesday.
