The Braves can’t seem to avoid an injury scare during every game leading into October. Friday in New York was no different.

Outfielder Billy Hamilton exited in the fifth inning of the Braves’ 4-2 loss to the Mets after hooking his right thumb on a base. Hamilton is OK and could’ve stayed in, but manager Brian Snitker planned on giving Rafael Ortega playing time anyway, so he removed Hamilton from the game.

“If it was the playoffs now, I definitely would’ve stayed in the game if I had to,” Hamilton said, relieved the injury wasn’t as serious as the pain he felt in the moment.

The speedster expects to play a crucial role for the Braves in October. Since joining the Braves from the Royals (via waivers), Hamilton has hit .250 with a .357 on-base percentage across 23 games. Regarded as a light hitter, Hamilton carries immense value as a pinch-runner and defender in the outfield.

Hamilton will be on the Braves’ postseason roster to serve that very role. His presence became all-the-more important Friday when the team announced outfielder Ender Inciarte (hamstring) won’t be back for the NLDS.
