Atlanta United will begin defense of its U.S. Open Cup won in 2019 when it hosts Chattanooga FC at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw in the third round of the tournament.
It will be the first time the teams have met in a competitive game.
The Five Stripes remain the defending champ because COVID-19 caused the cancellation of the tournament in 2020 and ‘21.
Atlanta United defeated Minnesota 2-1 to win the U.S. Open Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 27. Atlanta United benefitted from an own goal and another by Pity Martinez to win the trophy. The game had an announced attendance of 35,709, setting a new single-game record for the tournament.
Just four players, Brad Guzan, Miles Robinson, Josef Martinez and Emerson Hyndman, from the game-day roster for the championship are still with the team.
Atlanta United advanced in the tournament by defeating Charleston 3-1, Columbus 3-2, St. Louis 2-0 and Orlando 2-0.
This year’s championship is scheduled to be played Sept. 6, 7, 13, or 14. The semifinals are scheduled to be played July 26 and 27, the quarterfinals are scheduled to be played June 21 and 22, the Round of 16 on May 24 and 25 and the Round of 32 on May 10 and 11.
