Atlanta United may have gotten two pieces of good news Tuesday.
First, it wasn’t part of the plan, but the loan of striker Erik Lopez to Banfield in Argentina fell through for undisclosed reasons and the 20-year-old has returned to Atlanta. The team has been looking for another striker. Lopez could become the player to compete with Jackson Conway for minutes behind Josef Martinez. Lopez scored one goal last season.
The team said it will evaluate Lopez and decide on the next appropriate step.
The second piece of news, and the more important, was that Martinez scored for Venezuela against Uruguay in its World Cup qualifying game.
And it was a goal that showcased speed and an instinct that was missing sometimes last year as Martinez attempted to build confidence in his surgically rebuilt right knee.
In a previous game against Bolivia, Martinez attempted an audacious but unsuccessful bicycle kick.
Having a healthy and mobile Martinez, and quality depth, would dramatically affect Atlanta United’s attack. When healthy, Martinez arguably is the greatest striker in MLS history based upon his production of 89 goals in 108 appearances.
Playing Lopez at his natural position, could jump-start his career. He was misplayed as a winger by previous manager Gabriel Heinze.
Atlanta United is in Guadalajara, Mexico as part of its preseason training. It will play Mexican side Celaya at 2 p.m. Sunday in its third friendly. Martinez should be joining the team soon.
