Atlanta United forward Josef Martinez was named the MLS player of the month Wednesday.

Martinez scored five goals for the MLS expansion teams in its first three games. He is out the next 3-5 weeks with a quadriceps injury sustained while playing for the Venezuelan national team two weeks ago.

He is the first player from an expansion team to win the award since Patrice Bernier with Montreal in 2012.

Voting was conducted among media members by MLS Communications. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution doesn’t participate in the voting.

Atlanta United will play at Toronto on Saturday.
