Richard Money has resigned as director of Atlanta United's youth academy after serving in the role for less than nine months. He has accepted a similar job with Norwich City, which plays in England's second division.
Tony Annan, the academy manager , will be promoted to director.
Money was a candidate for the manager job at Coventry City a few months ago, a sign that he may have wanted to return to his native England.
Money, with Annan, was instrumental in setting up the five youth squads that compose Atlanta United’s inaugural academy class.
Money came to Atlanta United having worked as a manager or technical director for clubs around the world, including Newcastle, Aston Villa and Coventry City in England, as well as clubs in Sweden and Australia.
“After careful consideration, returning to the UK is the best decision for my family at this time,” Money said in a statement provided by the team. “It’s been a special experience building a program in a country, city and league that are all new to me, and I’m proud at what we have accomplished in a short period of time. I have great respect for the club’s leadership and am grateful for their understanding and support. I look forward to following their success this year and beyond.”
Annan has worked in Atlanta soccer for more than 20 years. He recently completed his Elite Formation Coaching License, as well as the U.S. Soccer Academy Directors Course. He is reportedly one of just six coaches in the U.S. to complete both courses.
