Atlanta United could receive some budget relief as a result of its decision to waive Chris McCann.

The amount of relief is based upon whether McCann is signed by another club in MLS and upon what salary they agree.

McCann, 31, had a guaranteed salary of $588,000 last season, according to the MLS Players Association. He made 45 appearances including 31 starts the previous two seasons.

If McCann signs for a salary less than what he made last season, Atlanta United must pay the difference.

If McCann clears waivers, his budget charge will count against Atlanta United.

However, a club is allowed to buy out one player who has a Guaranteed Contract during the offseason and free up the corresponding space in the budget. Atlanta United has yet to exercise its buyout.
