The Hawks’ game against the Rockets scheduled for Saturday afternoon at State Farm Arena was postponed.

The NBA announced Saturday morning that the game was postponed “to prioritize the safety of the players, fans and staff” amid the snow and ice on the ground in metro Atlanta. The NBA said “the decision was made in consultation with local officials.”

The game had been scheduled for 3 p.m. The Hawks said in a press release that the date for the rescheduled game will be announced later.

Multiple counties issued winter storm warnings through Saturday morning, warning residents of hazardous road conditions that could make travel “nearly impossible.” They also warned that “significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages.”

The Rockets already had made the trip to Atlanta for Saturday’s game. But freezing rain left anywhere from a tenth and a quarter inch of ice, making travel to the arena dangerous. Arena officials would have trouble staffing because o travel, weather and people being out of power overnight.
