It’s unlikely veteran catcher Stephen Vogt plays again this season, manager Brian Snitker said.
Vogt, 36, was injured Sept. 9, when he left in the seventh inning of one of the best games of his career. Vogt homered twice against the Nationals before leaving with what the team would later describe as right-hip inflammation.
Snitker indicated Tuesday that there’s a good chance Vogt’s season is over.
“It’s way too early to see where he’s going to be,” Snitker said. “I have my doubts that he’ll make it back this year.”
The Braves placed Vogt on the injured list a day after exiting the game. Vogt was acquired from Arizona in July, helping stabilize the Braves’ catcher spot while the organization waited for Travis d’Arnaud’s return. Vogt remained on the roster when d’Arnaud returned from his 86-game absence, filling the backup role.
Vogt has hit .197/.285/.337 with seven homers and 25 RBIs across 77 contests this season. He slashed .171/.247/.250 in 25 games with the Braves. Youngster William Contreras, promoted last week when Vogt was placed on the IL, will remain the Braves’ primary backup.
“I love having Stephen around,” Snitker said. “He’s a pro. I’ve been very impressed with him. I’ve loved getting to know him, what he brought to our club. Even if he doesn’t work out (his return to the field), I want him to stay around and be a part of this. He can help in all the meetings, game planning, all that kind of stuff. He brings a lot of experience and professionalism to what we’re trying to do.”
