Atlanta, in the midst of a winter storm that has cause mass traffic chaos, is also scheduled to host two basketball games Wednesday night.

The Detroit Pistons were set tip off against the Atlanta Hawks at 7:30 tonight at Philips Arena. The game has been postponed with no makeup date was immediately scheduled.

The NBA requires teams to be in a road city the night before a game except under extreme conditions. The Pistons were reportedly unable to travel to Atlanta from Detroit following Tuesday's home game against the Magic.

While Georgia Tech was among the number of institutions around metro Atlanta shut down by the weather, athletic department officials were still planning to play Wednesday’s men’s basketball game vs. North Carolina.

Conference rules dictate “that the only reason a game should be postponed and/or cancelled is if the conditions affect the safety of the teams or game officials involved.”

North Carolina tweeted the team trekked to its hotel in Atlanta by 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Last coach and staff arrived on foot to hotel at 145 am...nice little six block walk from train... thank goodness for MARTA!

The game, scheduled for 7 p.m., is close to selling out.

Meanwhile in Athens, Georgia is scheduled to host Vanderbilt. The Commodores flew to Greenville, S.C., and will travel by bus to Athens today for the 7 p.m. tipoff.

Because of the icy conditions, Georgia State's men's basketball game Thursday against South Alabama has been postponed until 7 p.m. Monday at the Sports Arena.
