Former USA gymnast Aly Raisman wants to know what it’s going to take for USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee to finally do the right thing.
Raisman— who read a statement on Friday during the fourth day of former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar's sentencing for the molestation of seven girls— posted a statement on Twitter Monday night in response to a statement by USOC.
Raisman demanded an independent investigation into why Nassar got away with abuse for so long while working for USA Gymnastics.
The USOC statement released earlier Monday took credit for the resignations of three executive leaders on USA Gymnastics Board of Directors after Nassar's sentencing reached a fourth day on Friday.
While the statement said USA Gymnastics much focus on supporting the survivors of Nassar’s sexual assault, Raisman contended that both the USOC and USA Gymnastics are indifferent to the pain of the survivors and are sheerly self-serving.
In her statement on Monday morning, Raisman claimed the USOC has refused to acknowledge their fault in countless women being molested by Nassar.
“For the past week, survivors came forward to courageously face a perpetrator of evil to share their painful stories,” Raisman wrote in part Monday. “Many of them, myself included, claim the USOC is also at fault. Was the USOC there to "focus on supporting the brakes survivors?” No. Did they issue any statement then? Crickets...
“They are still not acknowledging its own role in this mess. ZERO accountability! It’s like none of us were ever abused.”
Like in her statement during Nassar’s sentencing on Friday, Raisman called on USA Gymnastics and the USOC to open an independent investigation to uncover exactly what happened to assure more athletes who allege abuse in the future aren’t ignored like in Raisman’s experience.
