Matt Stanley could hardly believe his eyes. A young seal was crawling onto his surf board, ready to ride a wave.

Stanley was surfing with his friend Andrew Flounders off Amble in Northumberland, England, when the curious young pup interrupted their fun.

"It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience," Stanley told the BBC of his encounter.

The seal found balancing on the board was a bit of a problem.

“It kept sliding off, but every time you caught a wave it would surf in on the white water,” Stanley said.

Stanley said he was captivated by the encounter.

"I admit we lost interest in the surfing for a bit," he told the BBC.
