British police have arrested a 10-year-old boy in the killing of an elderly man who died of head injuries.

West Yorkshire police said Monday the boy was arrested in the death of a 79-year-old retired man.

The boy's name has not been released. The BBC reports the boy has been released on bail.

The killing happened Sunday evening in the city of Leeds in northern England.

Children of 10 and over can be held responsible for criminal offenses in England.

The Daily Mail reports that neighbors identified the victim as Victor Hepworth, who was discovered in the Harehills area of Leeds Sunday evening.

"I heard people outside and when I looked out I saw Victor lying on the ground," Hassan told The Daily Mail. "He looked blue and wasn't moving and he had a big gash across his eye. He was bleeding and someone called an ambulance. It took about ten minutes for the ambulance to arrive but it seemed like forever."

The BBC quoted Liaqat Ali, manager of a nearby supermarket who said the victim was a regular customer and he had seen him on Sunday.

"The old gentleman used to come to the shop all the time, God rest his soul,' Ali was quoted as saying by the BBC. "Everyone's surprised that this has happened. I'm shocked they've arrested a little kid."
