Evan Leversage, the 7-year-old who fought brain cancer and had his hometown rally around him for an early Christmas celebration, has died.
Stedman Community Hospice announced the boy’s death, stating Leversage had died early Sunday morning, pain-free, in the arms of his mother.
Leversage was diagnosed with brain cancer just before he turned 2. The boy completed dozens of rounds of chemotherapy over the years and seemed to improve for a period of time before tests earlier this year showed that the tumor had grown larger and spread.
Doctors encouraged the family to hold an early Christmas celebration. On Oct. 24, the entire town of St. George took part in the festivities, lighting up the town with decorations. Santa appeared at a parade held in the boy’s honor. Word of the early holiday celebration spread on social media with the hashtag #LightsonforEvan and in total, approximately 7,000 people took part in the event, which is double the town’s population.
In a heartfelt Facebook post by Leversage’s mother, she writes, “Evan you made this world beautiful. In 7 years you showed me life lesson after life lesson. I promise I heard you, and will make sure I hold firm to my promises I made to you. You are at peace my son, and we will meet again, I believe that. Evan you did make your mark in this world, you were an angel.”
Leversage’s mother encourages everyone to “hold your children tight tonight” and thanked everyone for their support, writing, “Please know that the love everyone has showed has made this pain bearable for us as a family. We thank you.”
