Michelle Mundy will spend 90 days in county jail for lying about having cancer and taking money raised in her honor.
Mundy, 38, of Springfield, Ohio, pleaded guilty to felony theft and took a plea deal. She was sentenced Tuesday and will pay $5,750 in restitution as well as be on community control for two years following her time in jail.
In the courtroom Tuesday, Mundy said "It was never about money. It was about a woman searching for affection."
According to court documents, Mundy's claim of having Lymphoma began to unravel April 25 when her co-workers went to surprise her at Greene Memorial Hospital, where she said she was receiving treatment. But, according to police, Mundy wasn't there. The next day, April 26, Mundy resigned from her position and the Ohio Masonic Home contacted Springfield police.
Prior to her employer discovering Mundy lied about having cancer, two fundraisers were held for her at a Springfield restaurant. Employees also reportedly donated money at work-related fundraisers, according to court documents.
Officers tracked down $5,750 reportedly donated in 2012 and 2013 and charged Mundy with theft. She turned herself into authorities May 16.
