A woman is recovering after she fought off a man who robbed her at gunpoint and tried to sexually assault her inside the parking garage of a Decatur apartment community, police said.
The woman escaped the attack with a “minor injury to her head,” Decatur police said in a statement.
It happened about 8:30 a.m. Sunday in a parking garage in the 200 block of East Trinity Place. The woman said she had just arrived when a man came up to her and asked her to help him get inside the building.
Then, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at her.
The suspect told the victim to hand over her belongings, and she complied, according to police. He then tried to sexually assault her.
When the woman fought back, the attacker ran away from the scene, police said. It is not clear if he took her belongings with him.
Police are still trying to locate the suspect, who they say is about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing gloves, a dark-colored, heavy jacket and a face mask and was armed with a silver revolver, authorities said.
Investigators are also working to identify the owner of a red Cadillac STS that arrived and left the parking garage during the same time frame as the attack. The vehicle has darkly tinted windows and no license plate, police said.
