She insists says it was the only way to save a dying puppy's life. But a Colorado woman is causing an uproar after posting a photo on Facebook of her breastfeeding the sickly puppy.
The woman defended her actions to KRDO-TV after receiving heavy criticism for her actions. The station agreed to keep her name anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the story.
The woman told the station that she only breastfed the dog as a last resort after the runt of a litter wouldn't eat from a bottle or take K-9 formula, “He just wasn’t taking it. I didn’t know what else to do, I was desperate and I just couldn’t bear sitting there watching it die,” the woman said.
“Literally what clicked in my head was like, put him on you, just pray to God he will take something and not die" she added.
She says she understands how some are reacting strongly to her decision, “I never thought I would ever do that, it was taboo to me as well,” she said.
Veterinarians say it is possible the woman could face health complications from taking such a drastic action and that human milk is not as healthy for the dog as a canine mother's milk.
However, the puppy is now a little over a week old and is reportedly in improving health.
