The 88-year-old woman pulled through the window of her personal care home as it burned died Tuesday, the Gwinnett County fire department said.
Crews were called to a home in the 800 block of Rock Springs Road, off Buford Drive, in Lawrenceville around 8:30 p.m. Monday and arrived to find heavy smoke and an active fire, Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. After being told one person was still inside the home, firefighters made immediate entry, Rutledge said.
Firefighters located the woman, whose name was not released, and removed her through a window, Rutledge said. She was unconscious while being taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and burns, he said. The woman died at Grady Memorial Hospital.
A second fire victim, an 85-year-old man, remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon at Grady. Found conscious outside the home, the man was being treated for burns and smoke inhalation, according to Rutledge.
Six others in the personal care home escaped without injury.
The fire caused heavy damage to the home, which is a private residence. A licensed personal care home called Senior Care America 2 is run at the home, according to the Georgia Department of Human Services website.
Tuesday’s death was the fifth due to fires this year in Gwinnett, Rutledge said.
