Atlanta police have arrested a woman in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 26-year-old father of three this week.

Demarco Head was hit by a vehicle Wednesday night near the intersection of Lakewood and Miller Reed avenues outside his mother’s southeast Atlanta home. His mother and several neighbors rushed outside to help him after the driver did not stop, according to neighbor Katie Carpenter.

Police and paramedics responded shortly before 8 p.m., and Head was rushed to a hospital. He later died.

Carpenter, who is organizing a fundraiser for the Head family, said neighbors took down the license plate of the white sedan that hit the man. Investigators later identified the driver as 33-year-old Charlissa Carter of Atlanta.

She was arrested Thursday on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and felony hit-and-run.

Head enjoyed cooking dishes for his mother and taking his children to the park, Carpenter said on a GoFundMe page.

“He liked spending time with his mom, Deloris, who describes him as ‘a very intelligent boy with a nice smile,’” she said.

The fundraiser is intended to help Head’s mother with funeral costs and had raised nearly $3,500 as of Friday afternoon.

Carter remains in the Fulton County Jail without bond.
