Wind advisories, flood warnings for metro counties

Metro Atlanta remains under a severe weather alert with a wind advisory for all of metro Atlanta and flood warning for Fulton and Forsyth counties, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The flood warning will continue for the Big Creek near Alpharetta until Monday morning, according to Channel 2. Flood levels begin at 7 feet and as of 2 p.m. Sunday, water levels had reached 7.3 feet. Minor flooding is under way along the Big Creek and some areas may become closed, especially areas upstream and downstream from the gage on Kimball Bridge Road and near Rock Hill Park.

By Monday morning, dry conditions return, but expect chilly weather for the morning commutes. And the gusty winds will remain.

You’ll be able to put away your umbrella at the start of the week, but you’ll need to bundle up as windy and colder-than-average temperatures are predicted, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz.

Winds will gust to 40 mph at times Monday — which will likely cause some trees to fall since the ground is saturated, Nitz said. The high Monday and Tuesday afternoon will top out in the upper 40s. The average for this time of year is 67 degrees, according to Nitz.

Rainfall totals have averaged close to 2 inches across metro Atlanta so far this weekend. More rain is expected Sunday evening, with likely rainfalls ranging from .10 to .25 inches.

The overnight and early-morning storms caused power outages and sent trees crashing down.

West of Piedmont on 13th Street, a huge tree fell, crushing a truck and part of an abandoned apartment complex shortly after noon Sunday. No injuries were reported.

In Stone Mountain, Roy Charles said the lightning in the area of Hardwood Court was intense overnight.

“(It) actually knocked some pictures off our walls, so I was concerned about the chances of fire,” Charles told Channel 2.

In south Fulton, crews chopped down and removed a tree that blocked traffic on a busy road. Campbellton Road was closed near Camp Creek Parkway, so crews could clear all the debris. The tree also fell on power lines.

Power crews restored service to neighbors in that area around 11 a.m. Sunday.
