Police use different methods to snare motorists who drive fast, including speed traps. Florida has had its share of speed traps in the past, most notoriously in the town of Waldo in the northern part of the state. That speed trap disappeared when the town's police department was disbanded in 2014, The Gainesville Sun reported.

Leave it to an anonymous sign in another part of Florida to foil potential tickets for drivers with their pedals to the metal.

"Well played, Anonymous Sign Artist. Well played," the Collier County Sheriff's Department posted on its Facebook page last week, as the department shared a photograph of a plywood sign that advised motorists that there were "police ahead." The sign was propped up against a sign in the Golden Gate Estates section of Naples that advertised the speed limit as 45 mph.

"In response to citizen requests, our deputies conducted a speed enforcement operation in Golden Gate Estates earlier this week," the Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook.

After setting the speed trap, the deputies were puzzled. Despite a steady stream of traffic, only one driver had been pulled over for speeding.

The answer came when deputies left the area, according to the post by the Sheriff's Office.

The sign, located a mile from the speed trap, gave motorists ample warning to slow down.

"Mystery solved," the Sheriff's Office wrote.
