A California man who claims he had gotten away with driving in the carpool lane with a mannequin passenger for some time was caught when he got a bit too close to a motorcycle cop.

The incident happened Wednesday on the congested 57 freeway, according to The Associated Press.

As the driver veered out of the carpool lane, his truck came close enough for the motorcycle cop to see that the truck’s passenger was not a living human being as required by law.

In California, drivers face a fine of almost $500 for carpool lane violations.
