Finally, we can all rest easy. Some hardworking scientists have answered the age-old question, "How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?"

And, no, it is not three as that sneaky old owl would have us believe. In fact, it's a lot more than three.

According to a recent study published in the "Journal of Fluid Mechanics," it's more like 1,000.

Researchers from New York University and Florida State University based their theory around how flowing liquid dissolves and shrinks material.

One thousand licks gets you through one centimeter of candy -- approximately half the length of a typical Tootsie Pop.

According to "ABC News," when Tootsie Roll got wind of the study, they sent the research team boxes of the lollipops for "research."

While it may seem silly that money was spent on said study, the results actually have non-candy implications. They will be used toward research in geology and pharmaceuticals.
