An elderly woman survived a frightening ordeal with a rabid gray fox, which bit her twice, then pursued her as she took shelter in a nearby house.

The fox reportedly tried to bite and chew its way through the door of the house to continue its attack, according to Ruidoso News.

The 78-year-old woman, who was not identified by name, says she was chased by the fox. She took off her sweatshirt and held it in front of her to try and scare off the charging wild animal, but the fox’s claws grabbed hold of the material and the fox proceeded to bite the woman on the thigh and calf.

The fox then attempted to charge law enforcement officers that responded to the scene, but they were able to capture the animal with a fishing net. The fox was later euthanized by a Game and Fish officer.

Local wildlife officials confirmed that the fox tested positive for rabies.

The woman was taken by her husband to a local hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and began receiving a series of rabies shots.

The  New Mexico Department of Game and Fish says the area suffered a gray fox rabies epidemic from 2007-2010.
