A man suffered critical injuries after he leaped from a fast-moving ambulance on Interstate 17 in Phoenix Monday evening, according to multiple media reports.

The man was a psychiatric patient headed for a local hospital according to KNXV. He jumped from the ambulance and rolled 200 feet away while it was traveling at 75 mph, the TV station reported.

The extent of his injuries was not immediately known, but he did survive the jump, KPHO reported. He landed in a gore point -- the area between an interstate's lanes and its entrance or exit ramps.

It was not immediately clear what caused the man to jump. The Arizona Department of Public Safety continued to investigate the case Tuesday according to AZCentral.com.
