The state Department of Transportation is warning motorists to avoid I-20 on both sides of town this weekend because of road construction, but rain forecast for Sunday could put a damper on the DOT’s planned work. Here’s what you can expect this weekend:
About that roadwork: Three projects will shut down multiple lanes of I-20, weather permitting, the DOT says.
“Heavy traffic is expected eastbound, just east of the Downtown Connector and in Rockdale and Newton counties, and in both directions in Douglas County on the west side,” DOT spokesman Mark McKinnon said, adding that the DOT is “encouraging motorists to find alternate routes to avoid long delays.”
On I-20 eastbound in Rockdale and Newton counties, a resurfacing project will block two left lanes from Ga. 138 to Alcovy Road through 5 a.m. Monday.
In Douglas County, resurfacing will shut down two right lanes of I-20 in both directions between Ga. 5 and Liberty Road. The westbound closures will be in place until 6 a.m. Monday, while the eastbound closures are slated to continue through 5 a.m. Monday.
Just east of downtown, the three right eastbound lanes of I-20 from Moreland Avenue to Columbia Drive will be closed from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night this weekend.
Risk of rain on the increase: Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton is predicting a 20 percent chance Saturday, but the rain risk goes up to 50 percent Sunday. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-70s Saturday and low 70s Sunday, Minton said. Morning lows will be in the 50s.
Downtown events: Centennial Olympic Park hosts the third annual "Party in the Park" concert Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m., featuring music by Girl Talk, MGMT, the Joy Formidable, Minus the Bear and Stokeswood.
On Sunday, the Atlanta Civic Center hosts “Festival at the Plaza,” a free outdoor festival showcasing Southeast Asian culture.
