The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a beloved officer after she was killed in a traffic accident Sunday evening.
Lt. Stephanie Hollingsworth, a 31-year veteran of the agency, died in a crash that also injured her husband, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Auston Allen said. Tony Hollingsworth, 62, of Gainesville, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, while Lt. Hollingsworth was pronounced dead at the scene, Allen said. Lt. Hollingsworth was 52.
“She was a dear friend and co-worker for more than three decades,” Sheriff Gerald Couch said. “We will miss her dearly and offer our prayers and complete support for her family.”
According to the GSP investigation, the crash happened just before 7 p.m. on Ga. 11 near Green Circle. A 16-year-old girl was driving north in a 1994 Ford Ranger when she traveled onto the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and hit the Hollingsworths' 2001 Subaru Forester in a head-on collision.
All passengers in both cars were wearing their seatbelts, and neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to the crash, Allen said. The GSP has not released the identity of the teenage girl.
Hollingsworth started her career at the sheriff’s office in 1989 as a secretary and was promoted to supervisor of the agency’s records office in 1993, the announcement said. She graduated from the police academy the same year. Hollingsworth served in that position for 26 years, the announcement said.
Hollingsworth earned the rank of lieutenant in 2008 and had most recently been transferred to the agency’s Office of Professional Standards, the sheriff’s office said. She received sheriff’s commendations in 2014 and 2019.
