The Georgia Bureau of Investigation filed charges Friday against a former Walton County deputy in connection with the death of his girlfriend in December, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Dwight Buchanan, 21, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in the death of Nikki Guined, 20, the Walton County sheriff told Channel 2.
After partying with a visitor early that Dec. 10 morning, Guined and Buchanan got into a fight, police said. But they reconciled and headed to the bedroom.
Buchanan told authorities his girlfriend shot herself while they were in bed in their Monroe home after asking him to give her his pistol, saying, “Don’t you trust me?” according to the police report.
“Alcohol was involved. You just don’t know what led up to it. We don’t know what she was thinking,” Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman told Channel 2 in December.
Buchanan was initially put on paid administrative leave, but has since been fired from the department.
