Sylvan Road remains closed Saturday, but Atlanta Tech has resumed its normal schedule as repairs to a water main that has reportedly been leaking for more than a week are still in progress.

“The pressure on the campus has improved and we have very few classes on Saturday so it was easier for us to operate on schedule,” Atlanta Tech spokeswoman Terreta Rodgers told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Saturday.

The repairs shut down Atlanta Technical College and nearby Sylvan Road Thursday and Friday.

“They are still out there trying to replace the valve and get everything taken care of,” said Scheree Rawles, spokeswoman for Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management. “They have to isolate where the break is and make sure they can repair.”

Crews began to repair the main Thursday night, but they were unsuccessful, Rawles said. They suspended work at 11 p.m.

Rawles said crews began work on a full shutdown of the water main at 8 a.m. Friday. However, because the main was so large — 24 inches — it was under a lot of pressure and shutting it down presented a challenge for the crews.

She added that some homeowners would have their water turned off when the full shutdown occurs, but that crews have been delivering water to the neighborhood. Homeowners had water Friday night and Saturday morning.
