As temperatures in Minnesota plunged to extremely dangerous levels last week, a photograph of a University of Minnesota student wearing a pair of shorts went viral, People reported.

The student, named Miles, declined to give his last name to a Star Tribune photographer. He refused to give it, the newspaper reported, "because he said his mom would be mad at him for how he was dressed."

In his defense, Miles was wearing a winter coat. Still, the temperatures that dropped as low as minus 55 in some parts of the Midwest were not a laughing matter.

On Wednesday, Gerald Belz, an 18-year-old University of Iowa student, died after campus police found him unresponsive in 20-degree weather that had a wind chill factor of minus 49 degrees, the Des Moines Register reported.

One day earlier, Charley Lampley was found frozen to death inside his Milwaukee garage, WISN reported
