Two people were killed in early morning shootings, one in Fulton County and the other in the city of Atlanta, law enforcement authorities said Saturday.
Shortly after 1 a.m., Fulton police responded to a call concerning a shooting near the intersection of Old Bill Cook and Godby roads. Upon arriving, officers found two men, both of whom had been shot, inside a car.
The driver, 21-year-old Anthony Bowers, had been fatally shot and a passenger, 21-year-old Demetrius Cosby, sustained multiple gunshot wounds, said Cpl. Kay Lester, a Fulton police spokeswoman. Cosby was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, she said.
James Hightower, 42, was arrested as a suspect in the shootings and was being held in the Fulton County Jail, Lester said. She added that the cause of the shooting was unknown.
Atlanta police are also investigating a fatal shooting. This one occurred around 7 a.m. Saturday near 2950 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta, police said.
Officers arriving at the scene found a deceased man, possibly in his mid-20s, who appeared to have been shot multiple times and had collapsed on the roadway, Atlanta police said.
A witness told Channel 2 Action News that he saw someone chasing the victim out of the woods onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
“The guy was running through the path; somebody was chasing him,” Jerome Scott said. “The (shooter) apparently missed him the first time and then (we) heard another shot. Then, the guy fell in the middle of the street and then (the shooter) just stood there and shot him about six times. He just kept shooting him.”
No motive has been established and the investigation continues, police said in a statement.
