An Alpharetta man who worked as a volunteer firefighter was killed early Monday, shortly after he pulled over to help a disabled car on I-75 North in Cobb County, police said.
About 4:35 a.m., Mark E. Strow pulled behind the disabled Chevrolet Impala just south of Delk Road, Cobb police Sgt. Dana Pierce said.
Strow, 52, activated a set of white strobe lights on his 2000 Ford Explorer, got out of the SUV and put on a reflective traffic vest, police said.
Moments later, the driver of a purple 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt hit the rear of the Ford. The impact caused the Ford to hit Strow, who died on the scene, Pierce said.
“He had given countless hours to the support of our department and our community,” the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said on its Facebook page Tuesday. “Mark died coming to the aid of another, that was the kind of guy he was.”
The post said Strow was also a member of the Georgia State Defense Force.
The driver of the Cobalt, 22-year-old Courtney McClellan of Kennesaw, was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Impala, 36-year-old Elvis James Jr. of Cartersville, was not injured in the crash.
