A DeKalb County road could be closed to traffic for three weeks after a water-main break left a large hole, an official said Wednesday.

A contractor installing fiber-optic cable damaged a 36-inch water main at Beech and Memorial drives Tuesday afternoon, DeKalb Watershed Management spokesman Andrew Cauthen said.

Crews were at work Wednesday to repair the road, Cauthen said. Work might also be necessary on a turn lane on Memorial Drive.

There was “significant buckling on Beech,” Cauthen said.

No cars were damaged, and no water outages were reported in the area because of the incident, according to Cauthen.

Weather is a factor in the repairs to the road. The asphalt can’t be replaced as long as the temperature is below 40 degrees, Cauthen said.
