A driver is in critical condition at a local hospital after a multi-vehicle crash that shut down I-20 West in DeKalb County for hours early Thursday, police said.

The unidentified driver of a Buick Park Avenue was traveling west “at a high rate of speed” when the car hit a Dodge Ram 3500 and a Ford Mustang west of Wesley Chapel Road, DeKalb police Lt. Lonzy Robertson said.

At the time, the Ram and the Mustang were slowing down for traffic from an earlier accident, Robertson said.

The driver of the Buick was taken to the hospital after being found unresponsive at the scene, Robertson said.

Heavy delays lasted for hours from the Mall at Stonecrest area to I-285, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Cars did not move from about 4:45 a.m. until just before 7:30 a.m. when the interstate reopened.

At one point, the Traffic Center’s Mark Arum warned drivers to avoid I-20 because of huge delays building in the eastern suburbs.

While delays have improved, the Traffic Center urged drivers to use Covington Highway as an alternate route.
