Two men suspected in an out-of-state carjacking were arrested Tuesday evening after ditching the car on I-75 and running away, authorities said.

The car was spotted at Lenox Square just after 6 p.m., according to Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer C.J. Johnson. When officers approached the car, the suspects drove off, Johnson said.

Atlanta police requested assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, and a trooper found a car matching the description on I-75 North near the Chattahoochee River. Backup from the GSP and the Atlanta and Cobb County police departments then arrived on the scene, parking a convoy of patrol cars along the shoulder of the interstate between Mount Paran Road and Cumberland Boulevard.

The two suspects abandoned the car but were captured after a search, Johnson said. They were identified as 20-year-old James Williams and 19-year-old Josiah Harwell, who were both wanted out of Missouri.

Williams is also facing charges of aggravated assault on an officer, fleeing and eluding, possession or marijuana with intent to distribute and traffic offenses related to the Atlanta incident. Harwell’s charges include multiple counts of drug possession.

They were both being held Wednesday in the Fulton County Jail.
