A pedestrian died Thursday morning after he was hit by a car while trying to cross a major DeKalb County intersection, police said.

The man, who was in his 60s, was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Covington Highway and Young Road in Stone Mountain just after 6 a.m., according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent.

“It appears that when he attempted to cross the road, he walked in front of oncoming traffic and was fatally struck by a car,” she said. The man’s name was not released.

Investigators said the driver stayed at the scene.

The crash investigation shut down the intersection for more than two hours during the morning commute. All lanes of Covington Highway and Young Road reopened about 8:20 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
