Three teens, alleged gang members, were arrested in connection with the high-speed police chase Thursday that sped through downtown Atlanta.
A pair of 16-year-olds and a 14-year-old will be charged as adults for violating Georgia’s gang activity statute, and for aggravated assault, armed robbery, theft by taking a vehicle, and fleeing and attempting to allude police, Fayetteville police said.
Two of the teens are from Atlanta, and the third is from Decatur, police said.
The chase began around 5:15 p.m., when police were called to a report of a carjacking in the parking lot of a Khol’s department store at 300 Pavillion Way, police said.
The driver of the victim’s stolen car refused to stop when hailed by responding officers, and the chase ensued.
The chase ended shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday when a Georgia State Patrol trooper rammed the suspects’ car.
The trooper, whose name was not released, performed a PIT maneuver, which caused the suspects’ car to turn sideways, according to Gordy Wright, GSP spokesman. The maneuver prevented the vehicle involved in the chase from entering I-20 westbound, Wright said.
The chase began as an alleged carjacking in Fayette County and lasted at least 30 minutes before it ended on the ramp to I-2o from MLK Drive. Officers from several agencies assisted in the pursuit before the state patrol took over, Wright said.
After stopping the silver sedan, troopers pulled three suspects from the car and turned them over to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. The three were taken into custody at the scene.
No one appeared to be injured in the multi-county pursuit.
