Three people have died in two separate wrecks in Cobb County, including one that involved a head-on collision with a police vehicle.
Two Marietta men died in a one-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning near the intersection of Westside and South Cobb drives.
About 5:15 a.m., Marietta police pulled over Marquis D. Parker, 28, for a traffic violation at the intersection of Sandtown Road and Westside Drive. As the officer approached the car, Parker, who was driving a black Chevrolet Camaro, sped away and headed eastbound on Westside Drive, police said.
Marietta police spokesman David Baldwin said the officer did not pursue Parker after he sped away from the scene of the traffic stop.
Minutes later, Parker’s car was found by Cobb police upside down in an embankment near the intersection of Westside and South Cobb drives. Parker and his passenger, Fernando J. Edwards, 31, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The men were not wearing seat belts, Cobb police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
The Cobb County Police Department is investigating the crash because the incident ended outside of the Marietta city limits.
A Marietta woman was killed Tuesday, and her passenger was critically injured, after she turned into the path of an unmarked Marietta police SUV.
Evelyn Lyle, 88, was driving northbound on Powder Springs Road in a 1995 Oldsmobile Cierra when she failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned left into the path of a 2013 Ford Explorer driven by Maj. Cliff Kelker, authorities said. The Explorer struck the right front quarter panel of the Cierra, Marietta police spokesman Officer David Baldwin said.
Kelker was not injured in the wreck, but Lyle and her passenger, Michael Lyle, 66, were rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, he said. Evelyn Lyle was pronounced dead at the hospital and Michael Lyle was listed in critical condition early Wednesday, Baldwin said.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
