1. Actress Debbie Reynolds dies. Reynolds' death comes a day after the death of her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher, who went into cardiac arrest Friday on a flight from London to Los Angeles. Reynolds was 84 years old. [Read here] 

2. A New Years reminder: Georgia has new fireworks rules. Gov. Nathan Deal lifted a ban on the use of fireworks across most of Georgia in December, clearing the way for New Year's Eve celebrations. And a 2016 measure he signed into law allows the use of fireworks until 1 a.m. on New Year's, though it includes other restrictions. [Read here] 

3. Downpours over metro Atlanta subside. Heavy rain and gusty winds hit metro Atlanta early Thursday and led to several crashes and standing water in some areas. [Read here]

4. MARTA bus caught in crossfire of gas station gun battle. A MARTA bus early Thursday got caught in the crossfire of a shootout at a southwest Atlanta gas station. A stray bullet shattered a bus window, and a passenger was slightly injured as a result of the shattered glass. [Read here]

5. Hawks walk off with overtime victory over Knicks. Dennis Schroder hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to save a much-needed victory for the Hawks in a game that saw Knicks star Carmelo Anthony ejected. The final score: Hawks 102, Knicks 98 in overtime. [Read here]
