Q: Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and Nick Gordon both claim publicly they were married. Would this be a common law marriage under Georgia law?

—Don Grulke, Tucker

A: A common law marriage in Georgia had to have been established before Jan. 1, 1997, for it to be recognized, according to state code 19-3-1.1. Brown and Gordon have both said that they are married, with Brown tweeting a photo of the couple wearing wedding rings in January 2014, but there's no marriage license on record in Fulton County, where they are living, the AJC has reported.

A family representative also confirmed to the media that Brown and Gordon were married in January 2014, but an attorney for her father, Bobby Brown, said earlier this month that they are not legally married. Bobbi Kristina is the daughter of Brown and Houston, who left her entire estate – reported to be worth at least $20 million — to her daughter, the Associated Press reported. Bobby Kristina has been hospitalized, first at North Fulton Hospital and now at Emory University Hospital, since being found face down in a bathtub on Jan. 31.
